Jay is the Managing Partner and co-founder of Barton Investment Management. Jay is Barton’s lead portfolio manager, continuing to serve our wonderful client relationships that he built up over his lengthy investment career.
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School (BS, Economics) in 1970, Jay joined Kidder, Peabody & Co. in Philadelphia. In 1984, Jay began a twenty-year affiliation with Alex. Brown & Sons (and its successor firms) where he was privileged to serve as a member of the firm’s Investment Committee. This committee, working with the firm’s Research Department, had a remarkable record of out-performance (versus general market indices). From 2004 to 2006, Jay worked with Legg Mason & Co. (which became Citibank Smith Barney). In 2006, Jay opened the independent investment advisory firm of Barton Investment Management, where he happily remains today. In addition to portfolio management, Jay is always on the lookout for the next innovative, younger company investment to add to Barton’s client portfolios.
Jay formerly served as a Director and President of the CFA Society of Philadelphia. He has taught at seminars sponsored by Kidder, Peabody, Alex Brown and the CFA Society. Jay is a resident of Florida while continuing to have a home in Haverford, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Gretchen, have three adult children and two grandchildren. Jay continues to support his two schools, Phillips Exeter Academy and the University of Pennsylvania. He also actively supports the Episcopal Church, the Salvation Army and the Ludington Library.
