J. Barton Riley, CFA
Managing Partner and FounderJay is the Managing Partner and co-founder of Barton Investment Management. Jay is Barton’s lead portfolio manager, continuing to serve our wonderful client relationships that he built up over his lengthy investment career.
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School (BS, Economics) in 1970, Jay joined Kidder, Peabody & Co. in Philadelphia. In 1984, Jay began a twenty-year affiliation with Alex. Brown & Sons (and its successor firms) where he was privileged to serve as a member of the firm’s Investment Committee. This committee, working with the firm’s Research Department, had a remarkable record of out-performance (versus general market indices). From 2004 to 2006, Jay worked with Legg Mason & Co. (which became Citibank Smith Barney). In 2006, Jay opened the independent investment advisory firm of Barton Investment Management, where he happily remains today. In addition to portfolio management, Jay is always on the lookout for the next innovative, younger company investment to add to Barton’s client portfolios.
Jay formerly served as a Director and President of the CFA Society of Philadelphia. He has taught at seminars sponsored by Kidder, Peabody, Alex Brown and the CFA Society. Jay is a resident of Florida while continuing to have a home in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Gretchen, have three adult children and four grandchildren. Jay continues to support his two schools, Phillips Exeter Academy and the University of Pennsylvania. He also actively supports the Episcopal Church, the Salvation Army and the Ludington Library.
H. Barton Riley, CFA
Partner and Co-FounderHaving co-founded our firm with Jay, Bart serves as Director of Research and Portfolio Manager. As director of research, Bart leads our firm’s fundamental research on our existing portfolio holdings. Additionally, he manages the firm’s “watchlist” of potential new investments.
After graduating from The University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree in U.S. History, Bart spent five years as a high-school history instructor, the final four at The Darrow School in New Lebanon, NY where he later served on the Board of Trustees. He is a Board member of Agawam Council, the governing body of his childhood summer camp. He is also a class agent for the class of 1995 of Phillips Exeter Academy.
Bart lives in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He is a CFA charterholder, and member of the CFA Society of Philadelphia.
Janna M. Forte
Janna joined Barton Investment Management in 2016. At Barton, Janna is the Chief Compliance Officer and is responsible for the firm’s overall business operations. She has worked in the investment industry since 1992. Janna began her career at SEI Investments then moved to Pilgrim Baxter & Associates, followed by Turner Investment Partners and Hirtle, Callaghan & Co. During most of her career, Janna specialized in institutional client service and building relationships.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Italian from the University of Notre Dame. She also holds the FINRA Series 65 license. Janna served as President of the Notre Dame Club of Philadelphia and was the recipient of the Clifford E. Prodehl Person of the Year award. She lives in Wayne with her husband, Fran, and their three children.
Michael D. Jones, CFA
Michael is a Portfolio Manager with over 35 years of experience managing institutional and individual client accounts. After starting his career with a small Midwestern bank trust department, Michael completed The Bank of New York credit training program before moving to manage the Bank’s small cap growth common trust fund. He moved to the Philadelphia area to work with Pilgrim Baxter & Associates and then Chartwell Investment Partners managing small and mid-cap institutional accounts. Prior to joining Barton, Michael was the lead portfolio manager for another independent RIA.
Michael earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from Miami University and an MBA with a concentration in Finance from the University of Michigan. He is a CFA charter holder and a member of the CFA Society of Philadelphia. He is also a board member and the Treasurer of the John Jay Institute and serves his parish in various capacities. Michael and his wife, Frances, have three children and reside in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia.
Clare Maloney
Clare joined Barton Investment Management in 2012. At Barton, Clare is responsible for operations and client management. She began her career in the investment industry in 1985 when she joined Dean Witter. After a brief stop at Kidder Peabody in 1989, Clare moved to Alex Brown where she worked until 1994. In 1994 she moved to Florida with her family where she worked for Dean Witter and its successor firms until 2007.
At Dean Witter Clare served in various capacities including Registered Sales Assistant, Producing Branch Manager Assistant and Junior Partner of an investment team. For five years Clare focused on being a mother to her young daughter. Clare and her family moved back to the Philadelphia area, and she joined the Barton team in 2012.
Clare resides in Downingtown with her husband, Ed, and their daughter.
Peter Shouvlin
Peter Shouvlin joined Barton Investment Management in 2017 bringing with him 32 years of experience in the financial services industry. At Barton, Peter is a portfolio manager who is responsible for fundamental research as well as business development.
He began his career at Bankers Trust in 1984, initially serving as a credit analyst, transitioning to the investment industry in 1993. Peter focused on the technology sector as a sell side institutional sales representative and as a buy-side equity analyst. He graduated from Lehigh University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance, and he received an MBA with a concentration in Finance from the University of Chicago. Peter and his wife, Kathy, have five children and reside in Connecticut.
James Tatlow
Business DevelopmentJim Tatlow joined Barton Investment Management in 2020 as a member of the business development team while also overseeing the firm’s trading. He began his career in financial services with Shearson Lehman Brothers in Philadelphia and subsequently moved to Alex. Brown & Sons where he first met and worked with Jay Riley. Jim’s experience spans middle market institutional sales and trading, corporate and executive services, and wealth management.
Jim holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the Villanova School of Business and received his MBA in Finance from Drexel University. He is a long-time active member of the Villanova Football Club and previously served as a member of the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur in Villanova. He and his wife, Terry, are residents of Malvern, PA and have three grown children and one grandchild.
